Second Annual O3 World A11y Design Slam

An interactive exercise exploring ways to make an experience accessible for people with situational, temporary, or permanent disabilities.
About this Event
Disabilities cover a broad spectrum that includes physical, cognitive, hearing, and vision impairments. It can be easy to take for granted daily situations that are made more difficult for an individual with various situational, temporary, or permanent disabilities.
In this Design Slam, your task will be to work in a team to create one or more universally designed solutions: this means coming up with a solution that addresses situations that make it difficult for an individual with a disabling condition; while providing a broad positive impact.
The task is not simply developing a technology solution—you’ll want to dig a little deeper.
Think – with accessibility in mind – how might we design something that solves for various disabilities, not just one. This can include the layout of a space, various assistive aides, to ways of pre-completing required tasks, or any other ideas your team may come up with.
Event Details
All types of participants are welcome – prior technology or accessibility experience is not required. All digital materials and tools needed will be provided to attendees during the event.
This will be a live event hosted on Zoom and will include live closed captioning as well as an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter.
Teams
Individuals will be grouped together with 4–6 participants per group (total, ~30 participants)
Timeline
4pm – 5pm EDT – Challenge Introduction / Team Grouping / Problem Framing
5pm – 6pm EDT – Team Ideation
6pm – 7pm EDT – Presentation / QA / Judging
Judging
A panel of judges will judge each team on a scale of 1-10 on the following criteria:
Creativity – Is the solution inventive, innovative, or creative?
Feasibility – Is the solution feasible and practical?
Accessibility – Is the solution accessible to a range of disabilities?
Inclusivity – Is this solution taking a universal design approach?
Prizes
Yes! Each member on the winning team will be rewarded for their efforts with a $25 gift card.
